I have always kinda known that many of our issues with Endometriosis have stemmed from mineral deficiencies. It kinda makes sense…. our foods are ultimately deprived of many of the nutrients and minerals our bodies need. Iodine is one of those minerals and this one is amazing!
1. Thyroid Gland
Iodine is required by the Thyroid gland. The Thyroid gland controls a whole bunch of things, including our memory, our fertility hormones, whether we feel hot or cold, how much oxygen is within each cell and our metabolism. Many woman with Endometriosis have thyroid issues. Which totally makes sense too.
See, the thyroid is like a magnet for all the toxins which exist in our diet and environment. All the heavy metals that exist within our bodies, through mercury fillings or through trace elements from the atmosphere all get drawn in by the Thyroid. Without Iodine, these toxins actually get absorbed by the thyroid gland and it is then, that we experience thyroid imbalances. Interestingly enough this includes chlorine and bromine (an ingredient found in common breads, which replaced iodine years ago).
The trouble is that this doesn’t just happen in the thyroid gland but it happens throughout the body, where there is a lack of iodine.
2. Breast Pain and Growths
The most common one we experience is breast tenderness, perhaps fibrocystic breasts or breast cancer. When we have a lack of iodine, the receptor cells in these areas, get filled with toxins. We know them as Xenoestrogens.
3. Our Ovaries
It also happens within our ovaries. These guys draw in the Xenoestrogens and toxins easily and without enough iodine, they too are under attack from these toxins.
4. Stomach Acid
We need sufficient levels of iodine to create enough Stomach Acid in the body. Without sufficient stomach acid we are simply not digesting our foods properly and thereby not getting many of the minerals and vitamins we are so desperately lacking – vicious circle isn’t it?
There is no way we can ever prevent toxins from entering out bodies completely. It is just not possible. We need our bodies to protect us from toxins and one of the key ways to do that is through ensuring we have sufficient iodine in the body.
Here is a great video from David Wolfe on Iodine:
A simple test
To know whether you have sufficient iodine in the body, simply place a drop or two of Lugol’s 15% iodine on the skin – the upper thigh or abdominal area is best. If the stain remains there for over 24hrs, you definitely have a deficiency of iodine as your body has absorbed it into the body really quickly.
How to take Lugol’s Iodine Solution?
You can take Lugol’s Iodine in two ways – one or the other – NOT BOTH!
Either apply 3″ amount on the skin and allow it to absorb into the body. When it has absorbed, you simply apply more.
The objective of the frequent applications is to accomplish the 24-hour slight stain as quickly as possible, rather than to have to continue applying over several months time. When you eventually notice a faded brown stain after 12 hours, check in another 12 hours for the stain. If your skin is clear after 24 hours, continue application once a day until the stain is apparent after 24 hours. When the faded stain is visible after 24 hours, discontinue with the application, as it is an indication that your iodine levels are normal.
You have to be super strict here – only ONE drop per day.
Alternatives to Lugol’s:
You can also get Iodine from Sea Vegetables and supplements. Kelp and Spirulina as supplements are fantastic at supplying the body with Iodine.
I am realising just how important Iodine is in the whole body and how it is not just related to thyroid problems. I have ordered myself some Lugol’s and will report back on my experience. What is your experience with Thyroid problems? Lugol’s methods? Noticed anything interesting with Iodine deficiency?
